About Radio X live
Technical details, frequency and station information
Radio X is a British rock and indie station operated by Global, broadcasting on FM in some areas, on DAB nationally, and online.
Its format is guitar music with a male-skewed adult audience in mind — indie, Britpop, alternative and classic rock, with a presentation style that leans on personality and humour rather than continuous music. Its weekday output is built around named presenters, several of whom came from television and comedy.
The station was created by rebranding an earlier alternative music service, and that lineage matters: it inherited a station that had carried new and independent music at a time when almost nothing else on commercial radio did. The rebrand shifted the balance towards established catalogue and personality-led daytime, which was commercially successful and disappointed some of the original audience.
That tension — between playing new guitar music and playing the guitar music people already know — runs through British rock radio generally, and it is the reason several digital spin-offs exist alongside the main service, each resolving it differently.
The live stream plays on this page, free and without registration.

More from Radio X
One more station on the Radio X network.
Radio X is Global’s guitar-led station, the successor to XFM, with indie and rock at its centre and a male-skewing speech output. Its classic rock channel digs further back into the same territory.

Frequently asked questions about Radio X live
No — Radio X broadcasts over the internet only, so there is no frequency to find on a set. That is a deliberate trade: an online station skips the cost of a broadcast licence and reaches the whole country from day one, but it needs a connection at the listener's end. Press play above and it runs in the browser.
Radio X keeps a mixed schedule rather than committing to a single genre, which is the older model of radio: one station serving a whole audience through the day rather than one slice of it. It broadcasts by stream, so it reaches listeners anywhere.
Not blocked. Listening to British radio from abroad is one of the more common uses of streaming, and Radio X is available worldwide, free and without an account.
Not especially — around 30 to 60 MB an hour. On a capped tariff a full working day of Radio X would be noticeable, so wi-fi is worth using where you can.
Reload the page first, which resolves it most of the time. If it still will not start, the station may be restarting its own server — that clears on its own within a few minutes and is nothing to do with this site.
