Capital is Global's hit music network and the UK's biggest commercial station brand for young listeners: its stations reach around 6.8 million people a week, according to RAJAR figures from December 2025, and more than half of them are aged between 15 and 34. The name goes back to Capital Radio, which began broadcasting in London on 16 October 1973 as one of the first two commercial stations licensed in the UK. It moved to 95.8 FM in 1988 and was for decades the defining independent station in the capital. On 3 January 2011 Global turned Capital into a network, rebranding a string of regional stations, so what was a London brand now covers much of the country, with London still on 95.8 FM. The network's centrepiece is Capital Breakfast with Jordan North, Chris Stark and Sian Welby, on weekdays from 6am to 10am since April 2024. On Sundays Capital and Heart share The Official Big Top 40, and every year the station stages two of the biggest pop concerts in the country, the Summertime Ball and the Jingle Bell Ball. Where Heart plays familiar songs for a broad adult audience, Capital stays close to the current chart. Global has extended the brand with Capital XTRA (2013), Capital Dance (2020), Capital Chill (2023) and Capital Anthems (2024). The stream on this page is the national Capital feed.
