About Gold live
Technical details, frequency and station information
Gold is Global's national classic hits station, branded since 12 September 2024 as "Gold Radio: All Time Classics". It plays the songs that have lasted — oldies and classic pop and rock — and reached around 1.8 million listeners a week in September 2024, according to RAJAR.
The brand was created on 3 August 2007 by merging two networks of oldies stations, Capital Gold and Classic Gold, most of them on medium wave. Its roots go back to Capital Gold in London, whose presenters over the years included Tony Blackburn, Kenny Everett and David Hamilton. In March 2014 Global moved most of Gold's AM and local DAB outlets over to Smooth Radio, and Gold was relaunched as a smaller service.
Its recent history is the story of AM radio in Britain. Gold went national on DAB+ on the Digital One multiplex on 10 June 2019, and its last big AM frequencies closed soon after: 1548 AM in London on 29 September 2023 and 1458 AM in Manchester at the end of April 2024. The audience followed it to digital rather than disappearing.
The format is built on recognition rather than discovery: a settled catalogue of songs listeners already know, with no pressure to chase new releases.
Gold is on DAB+ across the UK and on local DAB in several areas, on Freesat and Virgin Media, and on Global Player. The stream on this page is the national Gold UK feed.
