About Smooth Chill live

Technical details, frequency and station information

Smooth Chill is Global's chill-out station: ambient, downtempo and relaxed music for working, unwinding or falling asleep. It reaches around 457,000 listeners a week, according to RAJAR figures from September 2024. The station is older than its name. It launched on 21 February 2005 simply as Chill, a station built around a mood rather than a genre or a decade. On 3 September 2019 it was brought into the Smooth family and renamed Smooth Chill. The playlist draws on the more mainstream end of chill-out and ambient music, including trip hop, mixed with downtempo rock, vocal jazz, lounge, film scores and the occasional classical piece. It is a quieter listen than Smooth Radio itself, which plays easy-listening pop and soul. In its early years Chill ran without live presenters. Between songs listeners heard pre-recorded messages, including links voiced by Ken Bruce and Sean Connery, and the station has kept a low-key, largely presenter-free style that suits background listening. Smooth Chill is on DAB+ across the UK and on Global Player. Older DAB radios that do not support DAB+ cannot receive it; the live stream on this page works in any browser.
