About BBC News (720P) live

Technical details, frequency and station information

This page plays the live sound of the BBC News channel, the BBC's 24-hour television news service. It is not a radio station, but rolling news works well without pictures: headlines, live reporting, interviews and press conferences, around the clock. The channel launched as BBC News 24 at 5.30pm on 9 November 1997, the BBC's first dedicated rolling news service on television. It was renamed simply BBC News on 21 April 2008. On 3 April 2023 it merged with the BBC's international channel, BBC World News, so that a single channel now serves both audiences for much of the day, with separate UK programming at key times. It broadcasts from Broadcasting House in London. Its chief presenters include Matthew Amroliwala, Christian Fraser, Lucy Hockings, Maryam Moshiri, Annita McVeigh, Ben Brown and Geeta Guru-Murthy. Programmes include BBC News Now, The World Today, Verified Live and Newsnight, and overnight the channel is simulcast on BBC One after its own programmes end. For news on the radio rather than television, the BBC's equivalents are Radio 4, BBC Radio 5 Live and the BBC World Service, each with its own programmes rather than the TV channel's sound. In the UK the channel is on Freeview channel 231 and on BBC iPlayer.
